On Mondays throughout Hilary Term, the Oxford Centre for Christianity and Culture is hosting a series of interdisciplinary conversations which aim to shed new light on the unfolding migration context: ‘In-Migration: Cultural and Theological Dialogues on the 21st Century Movements of Peoples’.
In each session, a speaker will make a key input on an aspect of migration, to which scholars associated with the Centre will offer a response informed by Christian theological reflection and/or practice. Details of the next seminar are as follows:

Poetry in Migration

* Yousif M. Qasmiyeh is a poet and translator, and tutor in Arabic at the Oxford University Language Centre, University of Oxford. His recent poems and translations include ‘At the Feast of Asylum’ (GeoHumanities, 2016), ‘If this is my face, so be it’ (Modern Poetry in Translation, 2016) and ‘Thresholds’ (Critical Quarterly, 2014). At the seminar, Yousif will read a selection of his poems, and talk about the connections he experiences between poetry, migration, exile, God, everyday life and death.
A response will be given by Jenny Lewis who teaches poetry at Oxford University. Her recent work includes Taking Mesopotamia (Oxford Poets/ Carcanet, 2014) and two pamphlets in English and Arabic with the Iraqi poet Adnan Al-Sayegh – Now as Then: Mesopotamia-Iraq and Singing for Inanna (Mulfran Press 2013/ 14). Jenny is currently working on a modern retelling of the Epic of Gilgamesh and a ‘Poetry for Peace’ project with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Ashmolean Museum and Oxford schools.
