May has been a busy month here at Regent’s Park with a number of events and activities in College.

Tuesday, 5th May saw the College’s first Baptist Reunion – designed to replace the College reunion at the annual Baptist Assembly. College alumni from as far back as 1957, the year that Regent’s was made a part of the University of Oxford, attended the event which began with lunch in Helwys Hall.

RPC’s own Professor Paul Fiddes gave a seminar entitled ‘Seeing the World and Knowing God: Wisdom in the Late Modern Age’, which focussed on the work of British artist L. S. Lowry.

Emma Nash (2010, MTh Applied Theology) then spoke of the work that she has been doing with a new community-outreach church in Southend-on-Sea.

Later that week, on Saturday 9th May, the College became a hive of activity in celebration of Emmanuelle’s 100th Birthday. The annual College event, which raises money for Meningitis Now in memory of RPC student, Antonia Bruch, who died of the disease in 2009, saw students, staff and friends of the College gather on the quad for an afternoon of festivities. As well as a bake-off competition (judged by the BBC’s own Lizo Mzimba), there was a tortoise race, and an open-air production of Oscar Wilde’s comedy The Importance of Being Earnest.

Last Friday, 15th May, Regent’s Park alumnus Ken Batty, now Executive Director of HR for Lenovo, came and gave a talk to students of Regent’s, Harris-Manchester and Mansfield Colleges, entitled ‘How to Get the Job You Want’ before Formal Hall.

The next College event is the Boat Club Picnic on Saturday, 30th May. Alumni, students and friends are invited to come down to the River and cheer on the Regent’s crews on the final day of Summer Eights. Complimentary refreshments will be provided to all attendees on arrival, and a cash bar will be available after that.
